Review: The Getaway – More than just a movie

September 17, 2011

The Getaway, just a few blocks north of the Tivoli Theater in Columbia Heights, is a cool neighborhood spot.  I checked it out this past Thursday evening for the first time and plan to return.  It happened to be trivia night and the lower level bar was packed! Once trivia was over, people started filling up the second level just as a movie, The Illusionist, started playing on one wall.  By the time my friends and I left, the second level was buzzing with people seated at tables or sprawled out on comfortable-looking leather couches.  The walls are adorned with pictures of race cars, Paul Newman, and Steve McQueen of course.  The restaurant’s name is a reference to the 1970s classic movie by the same name starring Steve McQueen.  You with me?

Anyway, the staff is super-friendly and the menu sounded great.  My friends and I had trouble ordering because everything sounded really good.  We finally settled on entrées that featured lots of meat, potatoes, and mac and cheese.  That’s how we roll.

The mac and cheese was off the hook good. I mean, seriously good.  It’s topped with Gouda, which gives it a nice salty, smoky flavor.  I know Gouda has a lot of personality and some people don’t like it.  Trust me, you will like it here.

The short rib sliders (3 for $11) were also really good.  The short ribs were tender and flavorful.  They have a smoky-sweet chipotle glaze and are topped with crispy shallots and coleslaw.  I was also impressed with the steak sliders (3 for $11).  So often I find that the steak used in steak sliders at other places is tough and overcooked.  Not at The Getaway.  It was tender and cooked to a medium/medium rare, as requested.

I tasted my friend’s short-rib entrée, which came with mashed potatoes and a mushroom demi-glacé.  The short ribs were tender, but the demi-glacé was a little too salty for our palates.  Finally, my friend’s tuna tartare was good, but could have used a little more acidity.

I definitely want to go back and try the fried green tomato sandwich with bacon, goat cheese, and creamy avocado dressing.  That sounds like the perfect meal on a cold, rainy day or any day for that matter!  I also want to play trivia.  And I’d love to have a few drinks out on the patio.  So many things to do, so little time. Bottom line: The Getaway is a cool local spot where you can chill with friends, sip on adult beverages, and have a bite.
